Medical Errors. Facts, Figures and Prevention.
Iatrogenic= An illness or death that occurs as a result of a treatment or procedure. Medical errors, doctor error, adverse drug reactions, bedsores, infections, malnutrition, and outpatient procedures are all considered iatrogenic. All of these add up to about 784,000 deaths a year.DRUG SIDE EFFECTS- Drugs are usually tested on people, mostly males, who are healthy and not on any medication.- More than 2 million Americans are injured each year due to adverse drug reactions from drugs prescribed in hospitals.-Adverse drug reactions in the elderly are 2-3 times greater than in younger adults.- More than 3 million pounds of antibiotics are used every year in America. Thats more than 10 teaspoons for each person. Overprescription of antibiotics produces super strains of bacteria resistant to the current antibiotics.- The leading causes of adverse drug reactions are antibiotics, chemotherapy, cardiovascular drugs and anti-inflammatory drugs.- Everyone absorbs, metabolizes and eliminates drugs differently. What is safe for one person could be deadly to another. The problem is that doctors and drug companies usually recommend the same dose for everyone. That could be like giving the same dose to a kitty cat and an elephant.Prevent Drug Side Effects- Since most side effects are dose related, start with a low dose and go easy.- Tell your Doctor and pharmacist about any medications, prescriptions or supplements you are taking. Don''t assume they already know.- Read about the side effects for your particular drug and report any immediately.-Ask your pharmacist about the drugs precautions. Also make sure the pharmacist can read the doctor''s writing on the prescription.- Check out all of your prescription and over the counter drugs atMEDLINE PLUS
